Shocking pains: The most common cause of such "shocking" pains is transient pressure on the nerve roots as they emerge from between the disks of the vertebral column. You may have a ruptured disk, or just arthritis. Another more rare cause is lhermitte's sign, sometimes called the barber chair phenomenon, is an electrical sensation that runs down the back and into the limbs associated with multiple sclerosis.
