TMJ: Are you treating the cause of your TMJ symptoms? Most come from bruxism (chronic teeth grinding and/or clenching), but can also come from poor occlusion ( a poor bite). If these are not corrected, the stiffness will remain and the pain will return. See a dentist experienced in treating tmj/tmd. At the very least, get a nightguard. And make sure you are not grinding or clenching during the day.

Stiffness in TMJ: My question is "has the tm joint been decompressed with a neuromuscular dental orthotic and/or a pain release splint?" stiffness is often the result of muscles not being free of spasm or trigger points as well as capsulitis in the joint proper.

Depends: Every case is different. If your symptoms are improving, keep up with the same treatments. If not, consider seeing a TMJ specialist. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
