Fasting: From a medical perspective fasting is not in any way healthy. It interferes with metabolism. It can lead to problems with diabetes and other weight problems. It is not a good idea for many people with chronic medical conditions. I have never heard a physician recommend fasting (except to prepare for surgery or to test cholesterol) for any prolonged length of time.

Spiritual practice: There's no physiologic benefit that anyone's shown. Letting your appetite know you're in charge is a great self-affirmation. Whenever anybody tells you about "detoxifying / purifying" your body, it's not science, but this isn't so dangerous as the "detox" protocols that involve drinking something awful that can land you in the icu. Many (most?) spiritual giants have fasted. Your choice.
