Maybe : Delayed speech and flapping, which may be a form of stimming, are hallmarks of autism spectrum disorders. There will usually be other signs also even if more subtle. Neurotypical children can have transient stimming behaviors and speech delay can be related to decreased ability to hear. If there is a bigger issue early intervention is critical and it is never too early to ask for an evaluation.

Needs evaluation!: Bring your toddler in to your pediatrician and voice your concerns about his development. We screen for a variety of early behaviors that increase risk. Does your child smile and interact with others? Does he gesture and point? Does he seem to understand what you say? How is his hearing? Does he have good eye contact with you and others? What does his preschool teacher think? Best of Luck!
