Many reasons: There are many reasons for this kind of pain. Among them is pain from radicular pain or what people commonly call 'pinched nerve' the L5 nerve usually causes pain as you describe it and could be secondary to a disc herniation, spinal stenosis or any other abnormality causing inflammation in the spinal canal. Other reasons include a muscle strain or also pain from a renal stone.
