Quite variable: It depends on many factors including the shape of the roots, your health at the time of extraction, and how well you followed post-op instructions. If it is still bothersome 3 or 4 days later and if it is getting worse, you may have a complication requiring further treatment. Don't hesitate to return to the surgeon for an evaluation.
