Do you need them?: These are antidepressants. If you function well without using them, then stay off of taking them completely. Otherwise you can go back on them(if you remain depressed without using them.)
These doses if tolerated before are fine to take them like before.

Zoloft (sertraline) and related: medications are used by millions of people today.  I don't agree that they are so widely used and prefer cognitive behavioral therapy but that's another matter. People have different genetic make up of their bodies including their cardiovascular systems, urinary systems, liver, brain and so on. Consequently the biochemical  interaction of these systems with medications varies and hence some person may develop nausea on medication "x" while someone else may not..

Anti-Depressants: It is not a 'stronger' medication. It is of the same class and is a 'cousin' to Lexapro (escitalopram) and celexa.  Most of us in medicine try to avoid such descriptive terms as 'stronger' 'better' or 'good' or 'bad' when discussing medications.  One medication may be safer or 'more effective' than another in any given patient.. But, this question that you have asked before, has no correct answer.

Don't Know,: They are totally different drugs, xanax (alprazolam) is more for anxiety, zoloft is more for depression. Zoloft has some anti anxiety properties as well. You should discuss with your doctor.Each one has different side effects.

Yes: Zoloft is a member if the ssri's group which are the backbone of treatment for ocd.  Other medications include celexa, lexapro, (escitalopram) fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, clomipramine and others. Zoloft o's one that has low profile of side effects, including weight gain

Can easily happen: No one with a psychiatric condition should self  treat. Sertraline is for depression. It is not the primary treatment for bipolar disorder. It can in fact worsenbipolar disorder by increasing the frequency of the episodes, severity of mania, causing mixed mood states, or rapid cycling. As a friend, please pull her aside and tell her what you were noticing. Show her this reference if you need to and try to get her to a psychiatrist. Best wishes.
