i suffer from generalized anxiety with dep through the years zoloft,lexapro (escitalopram) and effexor(because of bp) lost efficacy.is there anything else i can take?

Yes - but what: non-pharmacological measures have you used? Have you tried cognitive behavioral therapy? Behavior Modification? Individual psychotherapy? Group psychotherapy? Qi Gong? Tai Chi? Acupuncture? Acupressure? Homeopathy? meditation? Yoga? Exercise program? Breathing exercises? Progressive muscle relaxation? Don't just rely on meds to get rid of your symptoms. Take an active role in eliminating anxiety.

what is the difference between zoloft and lexapro (escitalopram)?

Not much: Both are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or ssris, a fancy way of saying they help your brain hold onto and use more of the serotonin it has. Serotonin is one of the chemicals in your body related to happy things, like food, sex, and sleep (which is why the side effects often affect these issues).
Celexa, prozac, Paxil (paroxetine) are also in class. 
Diff comes in personal brain chemistry + med.

Zoloft/Lexapro: Both are ssri's used for treatment of depression & anxiety. Lexapro (escitalopram) in some cases is better tolerated than zoloft especially in regards to side effects of nausea & headaches. Also, Lexapro (escitalopram) is dosed once a day, zoloft can be dosed twice daily.

Luvox, Zoloft, (sertraline) and : Lexapro (escitalopram) are all SSRIs. They're all 1st line agents in tx of anxiety and depression. They all work via the same mechanism -- inhibiting re-uptake of serotonin, thus increasing serotonin concentrations.  the differences between the meds have to do with subtle differences in half life, serotonin receptors targeted, and slight differences in side effect profiles. Talk with ur doc abt the right med 4u!

Not any more common: Dizziness is not any more common an effect than it is for zoloft.  If you didn't have the effectin zoloft it is likely that it will not occur on lexapro (escitalopram).

Zoloft to Lexapro (escitalopram): Many physicians will do a cross taper gradually lowering the dose of one antidepressant while raising the dose of another. If however it has been determined that the zoloft has been of absolutely no benefit than there is no need for a cross taper. The Lexapro (escitalopram) should block any possible ssri discontinuation syndrome. Discontinuation symptoms with zoloft have been reported to be 1 to 2% but in my clinical experience have actually been far less than that. You should have no problem doing this. Best wishes.

If it is approved by: Your prescribing provider. Both are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Lexapro (escitalopram) is approved for treatment of major depression ; generalized anxiety disorder but some doctors use it off label for panic disorder ; agoraphobia.

in general, do you prefer zoloft or lexapro (escitalopram) for gad, panic, agoraphobia? i of course worry about side effects - prolonged qt interval - read too much!

GAD and medication: Please do what your doc asks but consider adding a behavioral approach to address the root of the situation such as clinical hypnosis, biofeedback, psychotherapy.
