Floaters?: It is common after the improved vision after cataract surgery to see many new floaters in the vision.  These are generally benign but merit a look by the ophthalmologist who did the surgery.

Follow up time is usually covered by most insurances as is post op glasses if needed.

2nd eye cataract: After presumably successful cataract surgery on a patient's first eye, he will be given the option of whether he wants the other eye operated on.  Most patients will eventually decide to do this, but it's not mandatory.  It mainly depends on the severity of the other cataract and if the patient is having persistent visual symptoms from it.

Not needed: A cataract is an opacity of the substance of the natural lens.  Surgical correction is done by removal of this material.  A cataract of this sort cannot recur although the supporting back membrane holding the artificial lens can lose transparency requiring a quick laser procedure to open it up and restore vision.  Rarely a lens may need changing or stabilizing but this is corrective and not a redo.

: Cataract formation after a blunt force or a piercing eye injury can occur rapidly,like days or slowly,like taking years to develop. The ones that develop very rapidly are ones caused by rupture of the eye lens. An ophthalmologist can often tell if a cataract is the result of an injury.

Yes: Patients commonly describe their eyes as feeling tired for the first few weeks after cataract surgery.  This can be due to increased dryness in the postoperative period, a normal amount of postoperative inflammation, and mild external irritation from the eyedrops used after surgery.  This symptom usually improves over the weeks following surgery.

Accepted Answer

Not really: Laser is a means of delivering energy and if aimed at the lens will induce a cataract.  A cataract is a semi-solid tissue which has to be removed from the eye and laser will not do that.  Laser has been used to be an adjunct to certain parts of the standard phacoemulsification procedure with the aim of making it more predictable or safer.  But removal of the cataract requires access by instruments.

Accepted Answer

Depends, often 1 wk: Presuming that cataract surgery is uncomplicated,  i ask my patients to avoid submerging the eye in water (no pools, hot tubs, etc.) and to avoid strenuous activity for one week and avoid eye rubbing for 2-3 weeks.  Many patients have fairly good vision within the first few days after cataract surgery, although blur can persist for weeks if there is significant corneal swelling or other issues.

how do you manage small deep set eyes during cataract surgery?

Accepted Answer

Not a problem: Cataract surgery has evolved so that all the surgery is done from the side instead of over top of the forehead as was done in the past.  This direction allows full access so that the surgery can be accomplished successfully and the deepness of the eyes is not a problem.

why can't i have glasses after a cataracts operation on one eye?

Accepted Answer

You can: There is no reason why one can't wear glasses after catarcts on one eye.  Usually if the cataracts are present bilaterally, the surgeon will wait until after the second eye to give the final prescription.
