URI (common cold): We no longer use color of phlegm to determine need for antibiotics. Most upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses which won't respond to antibiotics. Average duration of cough illness is 18 days so be prepared to cough for a while. Most sore throats are viral, not strep or bacterial. Doctor can evaluate: Throat pain can be from strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), mono, a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees a doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to see about antibiotics). The doctor can swab the throat for a 5-minute test to check for strep.

coughing up yellow phlegm. how do i know if it's from my lungs or throat? i do have a post nasal drip but that stuff generally looks lighter in color.

Your sinuses: most probably, as you would be much sicker if that phlegm is coming from your lungs, although it is still a possibility. upper respiratory tract infection is more common, and your description of post nasal drip supports a sinus problem, you may want to see your doctor, as you may need an antibiotic, in the interim saline nasal washes would help, good luck

i have yellow/green stuff in back of throat every morning for the past week. i had dark red spots on roof of mouth. what is it?  no insurance! help!

Neti pot sinus rinse: The mucus you have in the back of your throat is the result of a viral infection. Get a neti pot nasal irrigator at the drug  store and use the salt water perperation to rinse your nose 3 times a day. The red spots are the result of the virus and will go away in a few days or so. If not better in 10 days see a doctor.
