i have extreme constipation   i am taking 8 senna pills at night/  i have tried enemas,miralax,magnesium citrate, go litely,linzes, suppsostosrie    i do have to take hydrocodone daily .   i am in desperate need of a good plan to conquor this issue?

OIC: You have opioid induced constipation (OIC) and have failed regular options- you need to take naloxegol which is specific for OIC. Taken as 25mg per day - this will help as it reverses the effects of the opioid on the bowels

Constipation: Senokot (senna) can be taken every day to treat constipation in a safe way.  aside from being irritating, Fleet's enemas should be avoided.  increase water intake and amount of fiber in your diet to decrease constipation.  if daily Senokot (senna) does not help, an appointment should be made with primary physician or GI specialist

hi doctors! if consistent use of miralax, colace, stool softeners/laxatives does not seem to help/cure right away, is there a more invasive treatment for constipation that is used/helpful? i had an overall normal colonoscopy?

IBS treatment: You have repeatedly been asking questions on this forum about your apparent irritable bowel syndrome and its treatment that canno be answered accurately on a forum like this. As previously advised, you need to discuss your treatment witn your own doctor. However, you should know that recent research has shown that docusate (Colace) and other stool softeners do not work at all.

I : I am sorry that you are going through this.  You need to see a gastroenterologist and have a complete evaluation.  You may need a colonoscopy or a transit-time study to evaluate your intestinal tract.  There are multiple causes of constipation.  I am assuming you are on a high fiber diet,  walking as much as you can (preferably 2-3 miles a day), and are drinking plenty of fluids every day.  Check to see if any of your medications cause constipation (any narcotics  or psychiatric medications cause constipation).  But you do need a complete GI evaluation.

If you develop pain, fever, or vomiting then you will have to go to the er.

Constipation: This sound unusually intractable - I would consult a peds GI specialist because there are underlying disease that can cause chronic constipation such as Hirschbrungs Disease.

Bowel obstruction: Will produce abdominal pain and vomiting that becomes bilious ( bright green) and get worse over time

Not likely.: In a toddler who has otherwise normal development and muscle tone, it starts as a dietary problem with too little fluids, fiber, fruits and veggies and too much cheese, etc, that leads to constipation, then pain with passing stool, then stool holding, then enlargement of the rectal vault so it holds more stool before feeling full. Also, fear of toilets with potty training, or rewarding dry undies.

Probably YES.: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) likely will work. Make sure you drink adequate fluid and include fiber in your diet as well as using the Miralax (polyethylene glycol). Reduce the pain med dose as rapidly as practicable.

is it safe to take over-the-counter senna laxative every day to relieve constipation?

Constipation: Constipation becomes more of an issue as we grow older. If a high fiber diet, plenty of water and avoidance of too much dairy( they harder the stool) doesnt keep tou regular, then it's much better to take a daily laxative than to strain or not go for days. More importantly,  if you haven't had a recent colonoscopies exam, you should have one to make sure nothing else is going on.
