i had ercp to remove a gallstone from my common bile duct. the stone is removed, i'm fit and healthy but i have a concern. does having ercp increase the risk of bile duct cancer or pancreatic cancer in the future?

: One benefit would be that ERCP might pick up a cancer there.  As cancer can result from repeated irritation from chronic gallstones (maybe) you should now be at less risk.

i have urq pain, now bone pain on the right side and get night sweats. can a ct scan always pick up pancreatic or bile duct cancer?

Accepted Answer

Almost: Usually a ct will allow the radiologist to see dilation of the ducts in the liver and pancreas even before there is a discrete mass to find. If medical suspicion is high enough, occasionally an MRI and/or mrcp will be ordered as follow up, particularly if there are also laboratory abnormalities. Talk to your doctor about this, or seek a surgical or gastrointestinal specialist consult.

Panc Ca discussion: If there is a VERY strong family history of panc Ca, some might consider dynamic contrast MRI to find TINY lesions. But this is overkill just to exclude a panc. lesion that would be symptomatic as contrast CT and EUS are really good tests. There can be diagnostic challenges w/ abd. and back pain. Most are benign under 40 yo. An internist will have all your info and can try to put it together.

63 year old male all blood tests normal except ca19-9=2314. ct scan=enlarged panc. us=no stones. can it be pancreatic cancer?

Abnormal ct scan: The elevated Tumor marker and CT scan suggest possibility. However further tissue diagnosis is needed. Good luck

See MD ASAP: May be appendicitis totally unrelated to Pancreatic CA or stent.  could also be duodenal leak (Valentino Syndrome)

gallbladder removed 3/6/23. before the removal my liver enzymes had been slowly increasing and are now alt 193 ast 133 bilirubin 0.6. alk phos normal. ct scan and us were normal. no fever. could this be a bile duct obstruction?

: Bile duct obstruction would/ should have been detected at time of surgery and seems unlikely . More from cholicystitis. should normalize in 2-3 weeks. If not reconsult your surgeon

Accepted Answer

No: Most all gallstones are invisible on ct scan. The way to look for gallstones in the bile duct would be an MRI scan (mrcp) or by an endoscopy procedure of the bile duct that can also be used to remove common bile duct stones (ercp).

Accepted Answer

Yes it would: CT scan of the abdomen is a reliable to test to check for Cancer of the Pancreas. So you do not have to think too much about this as a source of your symptoms. Go see a Gastroenterologist if symptoms persist for more than a week or two.

Accepted Answer

Yes: In some cases a noncontrast ct scan can show pancreatic cancer,changes that could suggest pancreatic inflammation and liver diseases. However a negative scan does not rule out these diseases.

what would a pet scan show that a ct scan may not for a person with pancreatic cancer?

Accepted Answer

PET in cancer: PET scans are used to detect areas of abnormally increased metabolism, while CT scans only detect areas of differing density or lucency to radiation. So an abnormality like an area of scarred old tumor might look abnormal on CT scan but not have increased metabolism indicating active cancer on PET scan. False positives still occur with both, but they tend to commplement each other.
