A member asked:

Will a contrast dye ct scan always show small gallstones in bile ducts?

No: Most all gallstones are invisible on ct scan. The way to look for gallstones in the bile duct would be an MRI scan (mrcp) or by an endoscopy procedure of the bile duct that can also be used to remove common bile duct stones (ercp).

No: Contrast does not usually enter the bile ducts or gallbladder except under certain unusual circumstances. Gallstones and bile duct stones can often be seen in a non contrast ct scan, but they will also be detected in a carefully performed ultrasound exam.
