Trombiculidae: Itching can be helped with topical corticosteroids and antihistamines as well as hot showers or baths. In cases of severe dermatitis or secondary infection with chigger bites, a doctor should be consulted. Some apply petroleum jelly or painting nail polish over the chigger bite under the false belief that the nail polish will suffocate the chiggers under the skin, but it does not work that way.

: Get checked for scabies, pubic lice (crabs), and maybe folliculitis. A dermatologist would be ideal.

i live in great lakes area in u.s. when outside near woods today, swarms of black bugs all over, many bites on skin instantly turned red, welts, itchy. hours later, red spots and itching disappeared. were these mosquitos? or some other form of bug?

: Sounds to me like black flies, but could be a different species.  Regardless, multiple bites causing swelling, welts, pruritus, etc., might well need medical attention.  Mosquitos are currently carrying West Nile virus, and perhaps other infections.
Discuss with your doctor, but also contact State Health Department for further information.

Mosquito bite: Ice applied to site will help swelling as well as itching. Topical benadryl/antihistamine calms itching. Oral Claritin (loratadine) + zantac/axid/ Pepcid blocks both histamine receptors, thus relieving reaction & itching. If scratching has caused increased redness, pus, fever, use topical antibiotic or see doc. If fever, aches, headache, rash occur, see doc at once since moquitoes can carry variety of illness.

Probably not: That sounds much more like an allergic reaction to it, give the time frame.  Try Hydrocortisone cream and oral Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or claritin.

Body mites: Mites, or scabies, are microscopic organisms that get under the skin. They cause small raised bumps mostly in the skin folds of the arms and legs and aroung the waist. They often show up on the hands between the fingers. They are itchy and may be worse at night. There really is not any good treatment otc. Should get seen by a doctor to know for sure. Many skin conditions can look similar.

Hard to say.: What bug is feasting on you is hard to say most of the time. Very few bug bites are unique to a particular insect.  It depends on where you got them, and the season of the year, as well as the time of day, often.  Some bugs are more common in some countries or states than others.  Others are more likely in forests or beaches or deserts.  Others can be associated with pets, like fleas.

Different symptoms: While bug bites can lead to a rash, dust mites (and their fecal pellets) trigger asthma and allergic rhinitis especially at night.  Dust mites can trigger eczema in some.
