Very tough diagnosis: Sometimes MRI of the brain or spinal fluid studies are helpful.  Blood tests are seldom helpful.  Neurocognitive testing can be helpful, but obviously this is time consuming and expensive.  There isn't an easy and reliable test for this diagnosis.

Yes: False positive test for ANA can occur with viral infections ( hepatitis, parvovirus) , aging, medications (prescription, OTC)  etc.

See details: First of all, see a rheumatologist if you have not done so already. While an ANA can often be positive in hashimoto's it is much more unusual for the dna to be positive. Since you do not list your symptoms, it is impossible to offer a more specific opinion.

i had an avise test done - ana igg of 24.09 and it said 'positive'. what is the likelihood i have lupus? i have pericarditis too, for over a year now. other specific antibodies showed negative. are there other tests to confirm it is lupus?

: ANA is not specific for lupus and ANA + is not uncommon. You stated that other specific antibodies are negative so I assume the specific tests for systemic lupus, SLE, such as dsDNA antibody and/or Smith antibody were done and negative. If these Abs are negative, SLE is almost ruled out. If they weren't done, you can request them done for ruling out SLE. Pericarditis is often caused by virus.

Possibly : Those little white spots that you mention are common as we age. Without having seen them it is difficult to say but can be many different things. But certainly lupus celebrities is always at least a thought. If all  your tests point to lupus then this would as we say consistent with that. If not then what these white spots may be should widen. Special: Lupus patients ususally have a positive antinuclear antiibody and the bad cses a positive ati double stranded dna antibiody. The latter increase risk of kidney damage. 
It helps to get examined by a rheumatologist as there are some false positive tests.

Too complicated.: These diseases are difficult to distinguish at times and often require observation and repeated testing over time.  The biggest clue is the clinical symptoms and lab testing provides confirmatory support.  If you do not have significant symptoms, there may not be any more testing you need to do at this time.

Positive ANA: A positive ANA can mean many things.  Lupus is just one autoimmune disorder.  An ANA can come back positive and be rechecked and be negative.  There are other blood markers that we use to tell what an ANA means.  Ask your doctor if other tests were done.
