Asthma CXR: No. Lung x-ray may show some indications of asthma. Normal chest x-ray cannot rule out asthma. On the other hand, the abnormal findings that we see on chest x-ray are not specific enough for asthma. Asthma can only be reliably diagnosed by a physician by taking proper history in addition to tests such as pulmonary function test.

Difficult todiagnose: A chest Xray alone cannot give detailed information about whether a patient has asthma vs. COPD. Many factors must be taken into account. A full set of pulmonary function testing in a physician's office with FEV1, FVC, DLCO etc. and a detailed history and physical examination is the first step.

Need not be a cancer: lung nodules can be of any nature. needs proper evaluation with a CT scan of the chest (with and without IV contrast) to begin, as it is new and showed up first time.

BP and Potassium: I would recommend to check a blood pressure as well as potassium level, it may be low especially due to albuterol use in asthmatics, and cause lightheadedness.

2nd opinion: If you are still having symptoms after eight months with no relief from your inhaler, you need to get a second opinion.You may need to consult a pulmonologist, or even an environmental medicine physician, who can assess why you're still having the burning sensation, that may be due to environmental exposure to toxins or chemicals. This is very important to as they may need to reimage you by x-ray.

Sometimes: We do not diagnose asthma or COPD by x-rays or ct scans. That being said, we do commonly see evidence of emphysema on ct scans. We diagnose these breathing disorders with a pulmonary function test.

Get it checked: Asthma doesn't cause this problem. It can result from tuberculosis or from radiation treatments and some other problems none of which is typically good. This should be followed up on with a physician unless it is clear to you why it is present.

Accepted Answer

Smoke-damaged lungs: Hyperinflated lungs implies smoke-damage, which leads to emphysema, which leads to copd. If you haven't already, stop smoking -- you will live 10 years longer than your 42yo friends that keep smoking! the inhalers you're using are #1 steroid for lung inflammation, and #2 bronchodilator for coughing/wheezing. With luck, after 1-2mo you can stop #2 and maintain on #1, assuming you can quit smoking.
