started taking iron supplements. was put on augmentin for bronchitis. started to have really bad gas. then was put on flagyl for bv. gas stopped. now gas is back again. ever since the iron. i have never had this before. please advise asap ?

GI disorder: Antibiotics can alter the intestinal bacteria ("flora") and cause digestive abnormalities, causing your "gas symptoms".  If you have stopped taking antibiotics, obtain some over-the-counter (non-prescription) "probiotics" (consult your pharmacist for his/her recommendation).  This will help you return to normal.

No.: The iron will not. However dyes and other materials in the iron supplements can. They should be listed. Talk to your dr. And bring your bottle.

Prescription meds: If they were not prescribed for him - i would not. Prescription medications are to be used by the person that they are prescribed for.

Treat the cause: The cause of your anemia appears to be blood loss due to the fibroids. This leads to iron deficiency which you are trying to correct. But it is playing catch up and may not succeed. So you need to get treatment for the fibroids...ask your gynecologist how to fix up the source of bleeding. No other diet will help you.

when should i stop taking iron pills? im off and on with anemia. i had a physical in november and it showed slight anemia. i take my pills everyday + multi vitam and can feel that im better. should i continue taking them? its almost a year later.

Ferritin? hematocrit: 'Slight anemia" is not a valid diagnosis. Exactly what lab values were reported? Do you have heavy menstrual bleeding? Are you a blood donor or have you lost blood in some way? Do you have low serum iron [ferritin]? There are many anemias, of which iron deficiency is only one. Or are you at the low end of normal? Your Dr owes you a better evaluation and discussion. The multivitamin is not relevant

Some do: Some iron pills have a bitter taste. Others have a coating that acts as a barrier between the bad-tasting part of the pill and your taste buds. These are typically labelled as "enteric coated" or "delayed release". Iron in the form of a gel capsule also doesn't have a bad taste.

Use of iron: Supplements will not cause increase in body fat. However, it can lead to constipation which may lead to bloating and temporary weight  gain.

Iron pills side fx: G i upset is a frequent side effect of oral iron.U might try and reduce the dose or hold the pills altogether for a few days and see if these symptoms resolve.If so , then resume at a lower daily dose.Always inform your perscribing doctor of any side effects or medicine changes.
