i want to know if levaquin treats strep throat or bacterial pharyngitis since i'm allergic to penicillin and resistant to biaxin (clarithromycin)?.

Not a good choice: Levaquin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and usually preferred for more serious infections. Strep throat is usually still amenable to most first generation antibiotics. Being allergic to penicillin suggests u shd try a cephalosporin which shd help. Resistant to Biaxin (clarithromycin) is unlikely and erythromycins may still work. Relatively safer medications like clindamycin also exist.

i have strep throat. initially treated with zithromax, but had a reaction of facial swelling, switched to biaxin, (clarithromycin) on day 5 now and no relief.

Check with doctor: Even with a positive strep test, most sore throat symptoms are primarily due to viruses -- and viral infections do not respond to antibioticcs; they have to clear up on their own. Still, you should continue to take the antibiotic as directed; or check back with the doctor who prescribed it and follow her instructions. In any case, you should start to improve soon. Good luck!

Many variables: It could be that you have a viral infection instead or at the same time and so the medicine is not helping the viral component, or it could be an issue of resistance or a very low dose of the medication

No . . .: In the course of strep is pretty typical to get a fever a few days into the illness.  However, if your are feeling more pain, trouble swallowing or general sicker, you should seek the advice of your physician in the clinic.  Feel better!

i took antibiotic for strep throat which didn't work. doctor switched me to clarithromycin yesterday. today i have one hive. should i be worried?

Prob not: One red, itchy, raised spot (hive) is not usually a sign of a systemic alleric reaction.  If you are having an allergic reaction, you will know it shortly, the one hive will become many.  If that happens, stop the antibiotic, take a benadryl, (diphenhydramine) and call your doc or head to the er.

Only if you have it: If you have symptoms then you should be seen by a doctor and tested for strep. Common symptoms are fever, sore throat, headache, stomachache, nausea or vomiting.

No: While a significant dose may make you forget the discomfort, it does not kill off the germ or alter your risk of longer term complications without treatment.

can strep throat be treated with lidocaine?

Accepted Answer

Lidocaine: is an anesthetic and not commonly used for the discomfort associated with Strep throat.  Treatment of this infection should include an antibiotic.
