Aveno: Aveno sells a fine powder in packets that comes from the milling of oats. This does provide some relief from itching when added to tepid water and used as a soak. Please do not use oats, it just makes a sticky mess.

Viral illness: Hand foot mouth disease is most commonly caused by coxsackie virus in children. It causes sores in mouth which can be very painful, also small lesions on hands and feet. Generally accompanied by fever. It is very contagious and lasts for a week to 10 days. He can take baths regularly. For fever and pain Tylenol (acetaminophen) can be used. Teething gels also help numb the mouth sores.

It is most contagious  when symptomatic, the first week but can be contagious during incubation (just before the onset fo symptoms) and even for a time when the illness appears resolved,as it is shed in  the stool .
