Viral illness: Hand foot mouth disease is most commonly caused by coxsackie virus in children. It causes sores in mouth which can be very painful, also small lesions on hands and feet. Generally accompanied by fever. It is very contagious and lasts for a week to 10 days. He can take baths regularly. For fever and pain Tylenol (acetaminophen) can be used. Teething gels also help numb the mouth sores.
