i have been put on a long term treatment for elevated uric acid with 1 tablet colchicine and 100mg allopurinol daily. is the colchicine necessary?

Accepted Answer

Usually not: Colchicine is usually reserved for an acute gout attack, not for preventative measures.  Allopurinol should be stopped during an acute gout attack, and restarted once the pain has ressolved.  Go see your doctor if you have questions about the meds he/she prescribed you.

for gout.. do you know of any alternative treatment other then allupurinol  to lower uric acid, for prevention of gout episodes?

Accepted Answer

Yes : Yes uloric (febuxostat) is an alternative. There is actually a study being done to compare the two. You might qualify for it. See the link below. Participants get one or the other at no charge. 
Uloric is much more expensive than Allopurinol but it might be better tolerated or work better.

allopurinol - if you take it regularly for gout (say years) , then you have a flare up, should i stop taking it?

Accepted Answer

No: If you're already taking Allopurinol and you get a gout attack, as long as the acute attack is treated you don't need to stop taking allopurinol.  Just don't start Allopurinol during an acute attack.

If you stop taking Allopurinol during an attack, you run the risk of getting a new attack when you restart it again.

i'm taking allopurinol together with colchicine.if no more flare,can i drop colchicine but continously take allopurinol?will gout attack reoccur?

Possibly: Some people do well on just Allopurinol for suppressing gout attacks.  Do not stop your medications without consulting your doctor first!

with a flare up from gout, my doctor got me taking allopurinol. does this make it worse since its already flared up?

?: During acute attacks you may not want to start it. Once acute attack resolved, it is a very effective drug to lower blood levels of utica acid, decreasing the frequency of attacks. Goal is to get level below 6.

2nd gout flare is now in ankles on 200mg allopurinol & indomethacin.going on 5 weeks and not getting better. what do i do?

If indeed the : Diagnosis is correct which is made by "tapping" the joint and revealing mono sodium ur ate crystals under polarized microscopy then other mess should be tried like possibly uloric. Allopurinol is for an overproducer of Uris acid, perhaps you are an underexcretor of Uris acid. This can be found out from a 24 hour urine test.

i have hypertension and and gout. i have been presribed with cozar and allopurinol. in the even that a flare up happpens, can i take both prescription?

Neither of your: diagnoses are treated with intermittent therapy. You should be taking both medications everyday routinely not just when/if you have a flare up. Often times when you first start taking allopurinol you will have a flare of your gout but eventually with continued routine use you will no longer have any events.

is 300 mg of allopurinol too much to take on a daily basis for chronic gout. doctor is saying take it with colchicine. should they be taken together or just when it flares up?

: They can be taken together. as to  when you should take it -ask your doc who knows your problem. Also any time a med is prescribed pl ask the prescriber about- why, what to expect when to take and any side effects.

i started allopurinol and clochicine for a month ago.my toe seems to be fine/no flare.but my knee and elbow feel pain but no flare.why?

Mini flares: When you first start these meds for gout you may experience "mini flares" in various joints while your body is getting adjusted to the medication. Continue the prescribed regimen because stopping may cause a true flare

Orally: It is a pill that comes in different strengths. The doctor orders tests to make sure that the Allopurinol is lowering the uric acid in the blood.
