Sleep on your back: Avoid sleeping on your shoulders, or sides.  Try to keep arms down to your side.  Don't sleep on your stomach.  To help keep your arms to your sides, and not above your head, wrap your arms with  soft pillows and safety pin them on.  This will weigh your arms down a little, and you will be less likely to sleep with them above your head.

Sleeping on your arm: Puts a great deal of pressure on your rotator cuff and drives the cuff up into your shoulder blade and collarbone. It is akin to someone clamping you thigh for eight hours it is going to hurt. Furthermore your ac joint also can become inflamed. Finally the nerves in you arm get stretched and irritated.  Try sleeping in a recliner, wear a shoulder immobilizer, or sleep with your back supported.

Consider: Consider your positioning.  May want to lay on back or get a different pillow or even mattress.  If not improved or worsening, would recommend being seen by your physician to check you over - consider a full structural musculoskeletal exam by an osteopathic physician.

Shoulder: A physical therapy evaluation with a 'prescription' for home therapy exercises could help a great deal. It is amazing how something we think is so simple as teaching a few specifics range of motion or stretching exercises can help so much.

Many muscles: The symptoms may be due to sleeping position, previous arm immobilization, etc. Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) symptoms begin gradually, worsen over time, &amp; then resolve within 1-2 yrs. Conservative measures (heating pad, stretching) might help. Rotator cuff: Your symptoms of pain @ night and pain w/ movements away from body suggest your rotator cuff is involved. Pain can be from the rot cuff getting 'pinched' underneath the point of the shoulder( impingement syndrome).Try taking a NSAID for a few days. If your pain continues see a board certified ors for examination/ x-rays . Best of luck.!

However, a physician needs to know more about your chief complaint. Pain in the upper shoulder and with symptoms in your hand could be from a pinched nerve in your cervical spine.
