In moderation: Small amounts of alcohol is probably alright as long as you do not have an underlying liver disease or jaundice. Please do not mix pain pills and alcohol either. Don't over-do the alcohol & risk an injury to yourself while still healing from the surgery.

Accepted Answer

Yes, trial it first: Alcohol absorption or metabolism is not affected by the absence of the gallbladder.  The liver should be able to handle moderate amounts of alcohol.  However since bile, which would have once been stored in the gallbladder and release after meals, is now constantly expelled into the GI tract, you may find that the combination with alcohol may change your bowel habits.

Stomach pain: Alcohol can irritate the stomach lining and cause the pain. Limit alcohol use. Monitor other factors that can cause similar pain. Follow up with your primary care doctor if the symptoms persist.

Alcohol consumption: In moderate amounts should not interfere with healing or digestion after gallbladder surgery.  If you have other GI problems such as excess acid, gerd, ulcer, or liver disease, alcohol would be bad even without the gallbladder operation.

i had gall bladder removed in 2011. when i drink alcohol i get the same sharp pain i had at the time of surgery. when i eat a burger pain goes away.

May be: Something else such as gastritis, reflux esophagitis, stomach ulcer, etc. See your doctor for an evaluation.

Observation: This is a mild elevation. If you are feeling well, okay to get another GGT blood test in 3 to 6 months. Be well.

husband has pancreatitis about every 6 months. no gall bladder, no alcohol, cholesterol controlled with meds, had every test run.. all normal. why would it keep occurring? we are so lost as to what to do. it requires a hospital visit every time.

Chronic pancreatitis: Other than alcohol, ductal obstruction, and high serum triglycerides (not total cholesterol), look into hereditary pancreatitis by asking family. Also, cigarette smoking (if he smokes). Beyond that, autoimmune causes are more rare. Underlying diseases such as lupus or hyperparathyroidism have obvious manifestations and do not typically  start as pancreatitis. Key tests: ultrasound, ERCP.

No painless surgery: No surgery is without pain.  But laparoscopic cholecystectomy is done through small holes, biggest one is usually 10mm or about 1/3 inch.  You are under general anesthesia, go home same day or next day, and oral pain meds is all you need.  Nothing like the old style open surgery.  So, yes, it does hurt, but not much.  Go for it.

Get checked out...: Pruritis - or itchy skin - is not a typical symptom of gallstones.  Pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, however, could be a sign of gallbladder disease and warrants an evaluation from your doctor.  Good luck!
