how do women get ovarian cysts? i was told having ovarian cysts can be fatal, is this true or false? and how do we get them and why do we get them? why do they hurt so bad when it bursts?

Ovarian : Ovarian cysts are most often "follicular" in origin. This means that the ovary is trying to ovulate and doesn't release the egg or "luteinize", which means become a corpus luteum. It will then persist or sometimes enlarge. Follicular cysts appear black on ultrasound as they contain only fluid (which transmits the sound better than tissue).
Another type of ovarian cyst is a hemorrhagic corpus luteum. This too is related to ovulation. During the release of the egg, the wall of the follicle may break through a blood vessel causing bleeding in the abdomen or into the cyst cavity. These will appear acutely often accompanied by pain. On ultrasound they have "mixed echogenicity" meaning a combination of solid and cystic components. Women can have significant bleeding with hemorrhagic cysts particularly if they are on blood thinners or have bleeding disorders. Hemorrhagic ovarian cysts will often resolve over time spontaneously and require surgery on some occasions.

Ovarian cyst that continue to enlarge are suspicious for neoplasms or tumors. These can be benign or malignant (cancerous). A common benign tumor is a teratoma, often called a "dermoid" tumor.

For functional cysts (follicular and corpus luteum) prevention is commonly afforded through the use of oral contraceptives.

ive had an ovarian cyst removed back in 2016 and now i tested positive for hpv type 16 had my cone biopsy done 2 months ago my cervix is not stenosis cause i get my periods. can i still get pregnant in the  future?

Post cone bx ?'s: A cone biopsy may produce alterations in fertility, depending on how extensive the surgical process has been, as pregnancy does require adequate cervical lining to aid in sperm moving into the tubes/abdomen.  At some point, if pregnancy is desired, ask about a hysterosalpingogram  (HSG) to make sure your tubes are open. Pregnancy may be still very possible.

Corpus luteum: Well, you have to get follicular cysts (egg cysts) to conceive.  Then once you have become pregnant the site where you ovulated from because a corpus luteum cyst.  That cyst produces the Progesterone the you need to maintain your pregnancy until your placenta takes over production around 12 weeks of pregnancy.

is a 6 cm simple ovarian cyst something to worry about? 25. my said its benign filled with fluid. she said it will go away on its own. it causes me pain though. should i get a second opinion? i read online this is too big for a simple cyst?

: If your (GYN) physician has seen the imaging study and the cyst is a simple one (without complex echogenic structure within) the 6 cm cyst will eventually resolve spontaneously, and may take a followup imaging study if the pain persists. With a less than 10 cm cyst with no internal echo structure, a biopsy is not yet indicated.

Yes, unlikely: A cyst that has contents that will cause severe inflammation (peritonitis), a cyst that twists, cuts off its blood supply and causes gangrene, and a cyst that ruptures and causes interrnal hemorrhage could possibly cause death.  All are not likely scenarios.  Most ovarian cysts resolve without any treatment.  Oftentimes, they not even known by the woman to be present before they resolve.

Exam & imaging: If an ovarian cyst is big enough it may be felt by your doctor during the pelvic exam. A pelvic ultrasound will then confirm the presence of a cyst. Other forms of imaging, like ct scan or MRI will also show ovarian cysts

Depends on size: Ovarian cysts are a normal process of egg development and you normally dont feel any different than normal. Large cysts can be functional and produce abnormal levels of hormones which could cause pain, abnormal bleeding. Some cysts may cause pain during intercourse or with physical activity. Some make you feel full or your clothes fit tightly.
