Yes: Yes, sedative/hypnotic medications (while intended to improve sleep) can cause vivid dreaming to include bad dreams. Some sedative hypnotic medications tends to do this more frequently than others. If you are having bad dreams that are occurring only since starting the sleep aid and no other notable changes in your medication or life have occurred, talk with your doctor about maybe another med.

It Depends....: "sleeping pills" can be used for sleep onset and sleep maintenance insomnia.  This can be caused by bad sleep hygiene, which are habits that tend to perpetuate the insomnia.  A pill can only help so much if you don't correct the underlying cause.  Sleep apnea is another major factor in poor quality sleep. A thorough evaluation is needed before medication should be prescribed.

Nursing home meds: I suspect since your parent is in the nursing home you could ask the nursing staff what meds your parent is on.  I do not have time to review with the family everytime what meds I have their parent on.  This is a good question esp if there is confusion or other issues.

I wouldn't: Most adult sleeping pills have a variety of side effects &amp; are not appropriate for kids. Melatonin in a 3-5 mg tablet (OTC) or diphenhydramine 25-50 mg (benedryl) given occasionally will provide a temporary crutch until the kid gets back in a good pattern.

if i take sleeping pills just one night so i can get up early for a trip, will it give side effects such as constipation? thats my main worry

Probably not.: As  long as you follow the directions on the bottle, most of the common sleeping pills do not usually cause constipation. I would not go outside the recommended dosage ranges, and I would not use them more than a day or two in a row. Good luck.

Avoid sleep drugs: No, please don't start giving sleeping pills to toddlers to nap. Consider placing them in a dark room that is slightly cool. Try to nap at the same time everyday. Soothing but quiet music can some times help to relax them as well as the scent of lavendar.

Unwise: Taking a sedative the night before an important test may make the brain less able to function at its peak during the test. I think this would be a very unwise move.

Many possibilities: Zolpidem, eszopiclone, seroquel, trazodone, amitriptylline, benadryl, (diphenhydramine) melatonin, valerian root, temazepam, etc....

Job stress can come from many sources including performance anxiety, conflict with others at work, fear of job loss etc. These issues are becoming as prevalent in women as they are in men. Women often have much more work to do at home. Child responsibilities or being a single mother or responsible grandmother.
