Sleep: Sleeping on your back aggravates sleep related breathing disorders for example sleep apnea can increased rem sleep and disruption of rem sleep causing nightmares etc.

Night terrors: There is some evidence that night terrors can result from being overtired, hence creating a bedtime schedule can help. Also, if chronic, waking you up around the time they may occur (first few hours of sleep) can also help. Medications are rarely needed, and one old remedy some still use is valium for short period of time.

Yes: Yes, sedative/hypnotic medications (while intended to improve sleep) can cause vivid dreaming to include bad dreams. Some sedative hypnotic medications tends to do this more frequently than others. If you are having bad dreams that are occurring only since starting the sleep aid and no other notable changes in your medication or life have occurred, talk with your doctor about maybe another med.

OSA: Obstructive sleep apnea is a consideration here. If you snore, feel tired after you sleep enough hours, fall asleep easily in different situations like watching tv, or riding a car; and mostly if this started at a time when you gained some weight, you should ask your dr about a sleep study to rule out osa, and other sleep disorders.

Sleep problems: It does sound like you are feeling anxious. Medical eval first It may uncover underlying medical problems that need to be addressed. Cognitive Behavioral therapy can be effective. Psych meds may be indicated. Aim for daily exercise, 8 hrs sleep /night &amp; good nutrition w 5 servings of veggies &amp; 4 of fruit per day. Try tai chi, yoga, Qi Gong, progressive muscle relaxation, deep or breathing exercise
