Wellbutrin (bupropion): Wellbutrin (bupropion) is not recommended in individuals with past or present eating disorders. This is because of a higher reported number of seizures in this group. Talk to dr about other alternatives. Good luck to you.

SEIZURE RISK: The problem with wellbutrin (bupropion) and an eating disorder is primarily with anorexia. The concern is that wellbutrin (bupropion) can lower the seizure threshold and when some is anorexic they may be purging and have their electrolytes all out of whack which can lead to seizures. So there is now a double whammy for a seizure. Otherwise wellbutrin (bupropion) is a fairly safe medication with few side effects. Sr and xl safer form.

Talk therapy: Even with medication, i think it is a very goo idea to do some cbt talk therapy. That can help you feel more skilled (less helpless) in moderating or avoiding attacks. You may not need the meds if you are successful. Also meditation and certain exercise programs can be a good support for correcting this disorder. I'm impressed by your interest in self-management. I bet you'll do well.

It's less likely: Any anti-depressant runs a risk for a manic episode in bipolar disorders. Wellbutrin (bupropion) is considered a less risky choice than other drugs, but with monitoring and perhaps lithium too, it's a well respected choice. Communicate as well as you can with doctor to be safe and it should be okay. Adjunct talk therapy may be a big help! best wishes.

can you take wellbutrin and depakote together. i am on wellbutrin for bipolar i disorder and depakote for migraines issue is they are both ssris won't they interact with each other?

: Although there are no overt metabolic interactions, there are reports of suicide attempts in bipolar patients, and even increased incidence of diabetes in male patients.  Depakote is NOT an SSRI.
