Ophthalmologist: There are usually no early warning signs of the most common types of glaucoma. Blurry vision is a very late symptom. If you are worried about having glaucoma, or if you have any vision problems, the only way to truly sort it out is to have an ophthalmologist examine your eyes for optical and medical problems, including glaucoma.

Meds: This is a decision that you must make in consultation with your ophthalmologist. If you have recent onset glaucoma or established glaucoma you can be treated with I number of medications and or selective laser trabeculoplasty. The bottom line is you must do this in concert with your physician

with glaucoma at age 58, it is hard for me to understand how  i will be able to preserve my vision for 30 years.  won't this be difficult?

Not necessarily : It mostly depends on how advanced your glaucoma was when first diagnosed and detected.  Unless the disease was very advanced, i see no reason why you should not be able to preserve your vision for your lifetime if you follow your doctor's recommendations and use your medications as directed.  Glaucoma is by nature progressive, so the goal is to slow that progression to a crawl.  We have great medications and surgeries to help. Compliance is very important.

For angle closure: Midol can cause dilation of the pupil and can initiate an acute attack in patients with narrow angles they should not take any medicine that can dialate the pupil.

Narrow angles: Medication restriction that specify that they not be taken with the diagnosis of glaucoma refer to people with narrow angle glaucoma.  The medication can incite a angle closure glaucoma attack in those  people.  Ask your ophthalmologist if you have narrow angles.  If not the restriction don't apply to you.

Nerve fibers: The optic nerve is a cable with a million fibers. This is a measurable thickness. In glaucoma, there is a loss of fibers and thus, lower measurements or thinning. The RNFL thickness is measured and tracked overtime, with lower numbers suggesting thinning and progression of glaucoma. Its not a perfect test with a margin of error, sometimes only offering &#x27;questionable&#x27; changes.
