Warm compresses: Using a washcloth, apply a warm compress to the closed lids for 10 minutes, 4 times a day. If it fails to resolve, or you have increasing pain or redness, see your ophthalmologist.

Sometimes: A stye is like a pimple on or in the lid.  A pimple on the face, because of deep skin attachments stays in one spot.  On the lid, there are no deep attachments because the lid requires mobility, so the inflammation can diffuse over a broad area of the lid. So it commonly will.  Treatment is best started with topical very warm packs applied frequently.  If that fails then see your ophthalmologist.

Potatoe: Microwave a clean potato with the skin on for four minutes.  Wet a wash cloth or small towel with warm or hot water. Squeeze out the excess water and wrap it around the potato. Apply this to the eye lid until it cools down (about 15minutes).This can be repeated intermittently.

my left eyelid is swollen shut, may be a sty. i sometimes getstyes, but not this bad. what should i do?

Since : Since the cause is not known, i suggest you get it checked out.   It could be caused by a number of things to include an allergic reaction, a viral infection, a bacterial infection or even sinus problems. It could be a stye gone wild.  I think,  by your description that there may be some significant swelling.  If that is the case, your doctor  can make sure you do not have orbital cellulitis.  Try not to pick at your eye in the meantime.

i had a sty a few months ago, its healed since then..but is it normal for your eyelid to look a bit swollen or bigger after a sty has healed?

No: Normally, styes would resolve without consequences. Some, however, cause retention cysts called cholazion. I suspect this is what you're dealing with. It's treated with light massage and warm application. You may google it and see if it is what you have.

Chalazion: A chalazion is a small bump in the eyelid caused by a blockage of the inner eyelid oil gland. It is caused by a blocked duct in one of the meibomian glands. These glands are located in the eyelid (oil gland) directly behind the eyelashes that produce a thin, oily fluid that lubricates the eye.  If it bothers you, and ophthalmologist can remove it with surgery.

Internal sty: There are stys that are external (the pimple is easily seen) and those that are internal  (the pimple is not visible, as in your case). I suspect this is the case for your condition. Warm compress the area, gentle massage and see ophthalmologist if symptoms are not improving in a day or two.

Pain: Could be nodular scleritis or an episcleritis.  This is an inflammatory condition of the eyeball.  It may require medicine from your eye doctor-- seek help soon.

i frequently get a sty on the same location every time (bottom eyelid near the nose), this happens approximately every 3-5 months. i always clean my face daily, every morning and every afternoon. the last two sty got really bad and required medical attent

Sty/stye: This is due to clogged meibomian glands at base of eyelash. Recurrence might be due to scarred glands. Use diluted tea tree oil (natural way) of cleaning eyelashes with eyes closed. See eyedoc2020@blogspot.com for more info. See eyeMD if continues to recur for Intraductal gland probing or incision &amp; drainage if natural remedies/antibiotic creams do not help.
