Not really: Because your mouth is a wet place, scabs do not form like on your skin. Instead a blood clot forms in the area where the tooth was and over time tissue fills in from underneath to heal the extraction site. If you have sutures put in to close up the extraction site, you may never even see this blood clot at all.

5-21 days: The scab or clot that forms after an extraction usually appears as a whitish substance in the socket.  Depending on how difficult the extraction was, how healthy you are, and how well you follow post operative instructions, it may take several weeks before it is completely gone.  See your dentist or surgeon if you think something is wrong.

i got a wisdom tooth pulled 3 days ago and the scab is gone is this ok will i still get dry socket?

Dry socket: If you get a dry socket, they usually occur within 1-2 days after an extraction, and are very painful. Make sure you follow the post-op instructions given to you by the surgeon and keep the surgical site clean.
You might want to call the surgeon to see if they want to examine the surgical site before your next scheduled appt.

Sloughing scab: If the wound was sutured closed then surface wound should not really scab significantly and "come off" after about 5 days.  For a non-filled, non-closed extraction socket, without premature disruption, after about 7-14 days.  Premature loss of blood clot can result in "dry socket".

i am on day 8 after my wisdom tooth removal. everything has been fine but today the scab came off and now theres a kind of deep hole. no pain, a little sensitive and ive just been keeping it clean and drinking water. should i be worried?

i got my wisdom teeth removed 16 days ago. my tooth hole felt a little irritated. when i rinsed, a big black looking thing came out. i should mention i havent eaten anything black in the past few days. is this a scab/clot, should i be worried?

: Probably clot, but should have already assimilated. Call your Oral Surgeon, the practitioner that is responsible for your post surgical care.

7 days post wisdom tooth extraction & scab came off from lower. rinsed mouth with salt water and noticed a brown object in the sink.
there is a hole on bottom. no severe pain. top has scab intact. i do have tmj.
is this ok? is dry socket possible?

Yes can: The blood clot in extraction socket helps regenerate bone .If the lower right socket is empty &amp; starts smelling and pain gradually increases ,you must see the Dentist who did extraction , he might have given you Antibiotic as prophylaxis otherwise if needed he will prescribe Antibiotic and pain medication as needed .
TMJ problem at times increases after extraction due to wide opening of mouth .

i got my wisdom teeth out a little over a week ago. i accidently swallowed to hard and ripped a scab off of the bottom two extraction sites. now there are holes where the scabs were. my question is, is this something that will heal up on its own?

: YOU SHOULD GET HOLES SUTURED IF BIG AND FOOD GETS STUCK IN HOLES. YOU COULD LET THE HOLES HEAL ON THEIR OWN AND FLUSH OUT FOOD. KEEP AREA CLEAN AND HAVE SURGEON LOOK AT IS BEST SOLUTION.

Not necessary: Maybe a food particle. A blood clot that formed on the extraction site is vital to the healing process. To keep the clot intact, avoid touching the extraction site with your finger, tongue or toothbrush. you should carefully follow your dentist's instructions to prevent a dry socket. Rec.: call your dentist for post-op appointment.

i had my wisdom teeth taken out a week ago and one of the green/yellow scabs is loose and appears to be about to fall off. there was no blood and i don't have pain but it seems soon for the scab to be falling off already. is there reason to worry?

It is normal: The “yellow scab” over a healing extraction site is a normal healing process. This should not be confused with an infection. Nothing to worry. If concerned, always ask your surgeon for more information.
