hi doctors. what would you say are healthy and less than healthy activities to do and to not do before going to bed? is going on the computer a good or not good idea? watching television? reading? listening to music? watching videos?

: It has been widely documented that any screen time within 2 hours of bed, can cause disruptions in sleep. the only exception to this is the Kindle/Nook/Kobo/etc ebooks which use a different kind of screen technology. The underlying problem with screens (TV, Ipad/tablet, computer, etc) is that they emit blue light in a specific wavelegth that disrupts the brains sleep/wake cycles. Music is OK.

why have i been having trouble focusing my eyes on the computer screen?

Eye dryness: You might have developed a need for eyeglasses but the most common cause of loss of focus at the computer is eyedryness.  Try using a teardrop at you convenience next to the computer.

why can i get really tired in the head when i focus on something on the computer? not when i watch a movie just when thinking hard. have depression.

I need clarification: What do you mean by, "tired in the head?" is this a headache, eye strain or a reaction to being in front of a computer screen 2long? Does it happen when ur reading disturbing material online? Headaches can bcaused by many things, physical and emotional. I encourage people 2rule out physical possibilities with their physician before assuming it is emotional. If it is not physical speak 2a therapist.

Not necessarily.: Not necessarily connected but TMJ pain is often severe that you may experience visual problems and vertigo due to the pain. If you are in severe pain, it would be difficult to focus.

It is a diagnostic tool that helps detect visual disturbances caused by changes in the retina, especially the macula, such as in age-related macular degeneration. Probably not: Nystagmus is a group of eye motility disorders that causes the eyes to more involuntary in an array of different ways.  Computer work could theoretically worsen someone who already has nystagmus, but it would be very unlikely to be the primary cause.

Take a break: Stop looking at the computer every 30 minutes.

Accepted Answer

No: It can exacerbate dry eyes which can cause some difficulty with vision. You can use otc artificial tear eye drops to help.

can too much computer use cause seizures?

Accepted Answer

Usually not: There are some unusual forms of epilepsy where flashing lights or bright lights can trigger a seizure, but most people are not affected by even prolonged computer usage this way.
