There are many: Cystic fibrosis is a common cause of end stage lung disease requiring transplant.  All of the larger lung transplant programs treat these type of patients.  Find out the location of the lung transplant centers in your region.  You can contact the american society of transplant surgeons for center locations.

Smoking : Smoking cessation decreases the rate of disease profession. Pulmonary rehabilitation improves exercise tolerance. Oxygen if needed increases survival. Specific medications and vaccinations can decrease the frequency of COPD exacerbations.

Get on list: You must be listed with a transplant center to get a transplant.  If you are sick enough to need one and your lung disease is one that can be treated with transplantation. You cn have you pulmonary doctor refer ou to a transplant center for evaluation.

how difficult is it to get a lung transplant?

Accepted Answer

Can be difficult: Patients with a number of different diseases can qualify for lung transplants.  It can be difficult however, because patients must be "sick enough" to qualify for the surgery, but "healthy enough" to tolerate it and the anti-rejection medication.  Patients have to have a lot of testing prior to being placed on transplant list and may need to undergo some pulmonary rehabilitation as well.

Yes: There are a number of transplant centers in the United States that will perform lung transplant in patients greater than 70 years of age.  I personally have had a number of 75 year olds transplanted at certain centers in the northeast or florida.  Calling around to these centers will help identify where to go.

Possibly: It would depend on the cause of the lung failure that led to transplant.  Asthma may persist, resolve  or be mild after the transplant.

Accepted Answer

Yes: In fact emphysema/copd is the leading indication for lung transplant in the United States today.  Typically patients with COPD are given a single lung but if there is high pressure in the lungs (pulm hypertension) a double lung can be done.  One year survival rates are excellent (>90%) but five year survival falls to about 60%.
