i am currently in the middle of a 7 days valacyclovir and augmentin treatment for, respectively, a cold sore and an ear infection. i am scheduled to get my  second dose of pfizer vaccine tomorrow. is that safe?

: You can safely be vaccinated on schedule. (For future oral hereps outbreaks, ask your doctor about a single 2-gram dose valacyclovir, which is CDC's recommendation. It's just as effectie as taking the drug for several days.)

have weepy painful blisters inside nose. tried neosporin and cold sore treatments. no help. am immunosuppressed. had these blisters before, finally went away after weeks. worry it could get worse.

Please see Dr. ASAP: Weepy painful blisters are infection until proven otherwise, possibly a herpes infection. In an immunosuppressed individual herpes infections can be very serious. Over the counter cold sore treatments do not usually work for herpes infections anyways.

Best RX is TIME: The lesion undergoes a series of changes and heals over 14-21 days--after which the virus goes dormant. Anti-viral drugs based on Acyclovir are available by prescription and can be taken as a preventive med. Otc meds, like abreva, have variable success rates. I often use a laser to help stop the progression of the lesion if my patient presents during the prodrome phase--see your dentist early

Oral herpes?: First confirm the diagnosis. Not all apparent cold sores are due to herpes. A sore inside the mouth more likely is a canker sore, not a cold sore. Effective treatment is available for oral herpes, but not before confirming the diagnosis and it needs a prescription. Take your daughter to the pediatrician right away -- the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis and for effective treatment.

Nothing to fool with: An ulcer on eyelid needs to be evaluated.  Herpes simplex, virus that causes cold sores, is not very common on the eyelid but if there can lead to an infection of the cornea called keratitis.  You will need prescription medicine, acyclovir, for either. It may be a meiobian cyst [oil gland for lashes]  which usually clears with warm packs and sometimes needs antibiotics & followup eyelid scrubs.

Antiviral: Antivirals are best taken right when u feel the herpes blister (most often the cause of mouth/lip cold sore). Otherwise otc abreva is pretty good.

can i nurse while applying zovirax (acyclovir) ointment to my lip for treatment of a cold sore?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Just wash hands after applying it to be extra safe, but this drug is known to be safe when breastfeeding even if taken internally. We use it in babies all the time.
