Not available: I believe the "ankle boot" that you are talking about is actually a below knee walker boot/cast.  Unfortunately, these are not available at convenience stores.  These devices are typically prescribed and are dispensed by medical supply stores and/or orthotics/prosthetics vendors.

Doctor's decision: Immobilization for treatment is based on the type of injury sustained and the doctor's decision.  If yours is one that can heal with weightbearing, you may be placed in a walking boot/cam walker; however, if it is an injury that will require more stringent immobilization a cast may be employed.

Any ankle sprain: It does not have to be bad at all.  Ankle sprains generally require some kind of immobilization while you are going through the healing process.  As for what device is used to immobilize that is up to the discretion of your healthcare provider.  However, walking boots can be used for any grade of ankle sprain.

Ankle pain: Continue to monitor your ankle for swelling, pain or difficulty walking or standing. If any of these develop, see your doctor. The old boot may have offered stability to the ankle joint similar to an ankle splint.
