Strep  Tonsillitis: Strep throat is with fever, headache , chills , bodyaches, exudate , painful neck glands, petechia  in the pharyngeal mucosa, impetigo around nose . Colds is viral without  much  accompanying  symptoms.

Could be carrier: If you've been properly tested and treated with right antibiotics and yet experiencing recurrent bouts, you are probably a strep carrier.  If so, you should be treated with 10-day augmentin, clindamycin, or benzathin penicillin injection plus rifampin.

Mgt: You can repeat the dose, but the total course should be the same or 5 days. Please ask your PCP to call in another tablet.

Are You Sure: Firstly did you get tested for Strep.  If you did and was positive then Amoxicillin is the correct drug for you.  Stick with the antibiotic, finish the course, gargle with salt water, drink warmed fluids. If you did not test positive and a culture was sent, await the culture report.  It may not be strep.  there are so many other causes for sore throat.

Strep/Zithromax: I'm not surprised. More and more strep are becoming resistant to Azithromycin and it is not considered a very good antibiotic anymore for strep. Penicillin or Amoxicillin is still the treatment of choice by far. You need to call your doc back today, let them know you are not improving on the current antibiotic and request a change or re-evaluation (could you have something lie mono in addition?).

Drug reaction: I presume that you were given an antibiotic for your strep throat.  If this is the first time you took this kind of abx, you may develop an allergy to it in about 10 days. However if the hives occur only when you are in water, it is called aquagenic urticaria for which pre-medication with an antihistamine may help.  Note that if cold water is the issue ,  you need to see an allergist.
