Constipating foods: You will find that rice cereal, bananas and  apple sauce are often constipating foods. It is not an allergic effect. Loosening foods include juices like apple or prune and various fruits like peaches or prunes.

RICE ALLERGY?: Among the cereals when first intruducing solid foods, rice cereal is the safest. Mothers are advised to give cereals one by one to avoid allergy especially to wheat. During diarrhea, we give rice cereal to the diet.

what to do for infant 5 weeks who is constipated. breast fed with rice cereal in pumped milk for reflux, also on zantac (ranitidine) two times daily.  has not had bowel movement in two days and is very fussy

Stop the rice: Stop adding rice cereal to the pumped milk (good job on breast feeding, by the way!).  Keep breast feeding and keep the zantac (ranitidine).  Rice cereal is very constipating!  for reflux elevate the head of the crib.  In addition to constipation, rice cereal before age 6 months is related to obesity in later life.  
You may also try a glycerine suppository (found in the baby section).  After 7 days call md.

my 14mo son is a picky eater, who doesn't like textures still. i give him baby cereal in organic cows milk to supplement his diet. is that ok to do?

Texture aversion: Texture aversions can be caused by a few different things, but a swallowing study with a trained speech or occupational therapist may be in order to evaluate for physical causes for your son's symptoms.  In the interim, supplementing with cows milk and cereals (provided he has no cow milk sensitivity or lactose intolerance) should not be harmful.  Pediasure is another alternative supplement.

Why ?: Thickened formula is occasionally used as a treatment of reflux. It does not help a baby sleep longer.In fact, any feeding just prior to sleep trains a kid to need feeding to settle to sleep any time they awaken at  night and increases the risk of a long term sleep disturbance by 400%.

Insufficient info : For one thing you don’t state the age of your baby which is important. But babies can grow well on breast milk only up to six months. Premature introduction of formula milk or solids ca cause unnecessary problems like constipation, obesity and allergies. Abdominal colic could be responsible for the discomfort

About: as nutritious as any other infant cereal.  Rice cereal and oatmeal are very similar across brands.  Beware of the stage 2 sweet potato and chicken though, as there's a recall because some glass was found contaminating some jars.
