Many possibilities: Because of the duration of the bleeding, it is unlikely to be caused by anything serious.  Internal hemorrhoidal bleeding is the first thing that comes to mind, but one also has to consider proctitis, a polyp or an anal fissure (especially if there is pain on defecation).  Go to a gastroenterologist to get checked out.

Various things: Bright red blood can be an anal fissure. Blood mixed throughout stool warrants a visit to the doctor. Bloody loose stool could be salmonella or similar bacterial infection. Can also indicate a polyp. If persists more than a day or two see the doctor...And if accompanied by fever or intense cramping see doctor.

Hemorrhoids: In a young person, say under 50, bright red blood on the toliet paper is most commonly simply due to hemorrhoids.  However, colon cancers can occur in the rectal area and present with brigth red blood on the paper only.  Rectal bleeding in my opinion, should always be investigated by a doctor.

: If the blood is bright red it means it comes from near the outlet. Often from a crack/fissure in the purse string like closing mechanism of the outlet. The further up the origin the darker red &amp; a shift to purple or black blood would be because of breakdown. Constipation or bulky stools passed quickly can cause such cracks.

Occult blood test: Fecal occult blood test is done to see if you have evidence of bleeding in the GI tract. The sensitivity will be very low if it is done only once. The sensitivity will be much higher if that is done in 3 separate occasion. Your md likely did it for a good reason- eg- you have significant family history of colon cancers; or  there are suspicious sign/symptoms that have to be evaluated further etc.

? Hemorrhoids: Your description sounds like hemorrhoids but could be something more serious.  Go see your regular doctor.

See your PCP or GI: See your family doctor first, and he/she might refer you to a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon depending on what he thinks the bleeding is coming from.

NO blood: No blood should be in the stool If the child is constipated then this may explain it. BUT. the child needs seen by the doctor and then problem reevaluated. If the child has ongoing clay colored stool this will need to be looked into. Take the child to the pediatrician
