Irregular periods: Irregular periods are one of the most common problems obgyns treat. If this is one time problem it usually resolves on its own. If this is a recurring problem you should be evaluated. Infections ;  hormonal changes can cause spotting. If there is a concern for pregnancy then do  a home pregnancy test .  There are many options available to help regulate the menstrual cycle. Schedule a visit.

This will shed away in the form of bleeding when pregnancy has not occurred and then the process will start all over again.

At 48 okay: At 48 it's normal to have some increased fluxuations in your cycle.  The average age of menopause is 51, so you're getting closer. Many women in late 40's begin to miss periods.  If you're not too heavy or too thin, and you don't have a thyroid disorder then i wouldn't worry.  Of course, pregnancy needs to be ruled out (i know, i know!), but that's highly unlikely.
