Yes: If your periods are long and/or heavy, various medications may help, such as birth control pills (even though you've had a tubal ligation). Other options for long heavy periods sometimes include lysteda, the Levonorgestrel iud, or an endometrial ablation. It's worth talking to your gynecologist about.

Is it possible for a colposcope to prolong a menstrual cycle?

Unusual: Any stress on the body, such as surgery, can prolong or alter the next menses. It would be unusual for a colposcopy to cause this. However, if a biopsy was performed, the biopsy site can bleed lightly, usually for a day or two. Prolonged bleeding should be addressed by the gynecologist.

Doctor can evaluate: There are many causes for irregular menstruation. One common one is polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos), a hormonal imbalance along with cysts in the ovaries. Though most irregular menstruation is not acutely dangerous, any woman who does not menstruate monthly should consider seeing her pcp or an ob/gyn for evaluation.

Less than expected: Menstrual cycle is the time period between the beginning of one menses and the begining of the next menses. For example, if your last menses started on march 1st and the next one started on march 29, your menstrual cycle was 28 days. If that next one started on the 15th instead of 29th, your cycle would have been 14days and will be considered a shortened cycle.

A 17-year-old female asked:

Is there any way to shorten your period or is there any possibility to make it come sooner or later than your normal menstrual cycle?

Depends: The cycle can be altered to a great extent with oral contraceptive pills. It is quite possible to delay the cycle for days, weeks, and even months. Without surgical means it is not possible to cause the menses to come sooner than would normally happen after ovulation.
