Many WBCs: The main thing it will show is many white blood cells.  However, this is seen with any infection.  There may or may not be defective red blood cells due to the inflammation and toxins from the pathogen.  Sepsis is determined by vital signs and a source of infection.  Septic shock is when there is also at least one organ severely affected or failing (usually temporary).

Collapse: Sepsis occurs when the bacteria is able to reach the blood stream. Septic shock occurs when, as a result of sepsis, the blood pressure collapses and the cardiovascular system fails.

Depends...: The length of time between sepsis and septic shock is variable and it depends on what organism is causing the sepsis since some organisms are more virulent than others. It also depends on the treatment of the sepsis. If proper anti microbial therapy is given, the sepsis will not continue on to septic shock.

Similar: Septic shock can occur with many types of bacteria including Meningococcal bacteria, other bacteria, fungal infections and even viruses. They have in common an overwhelming immune response which causes innocent bystander damage to normal organ function.

Taken what?: I am assuming you are referring to her sepsis, in which case the answer is no, sepsis doesn't last for months.  Chronic urinary tract infections exist but are uncommon unless there is a resistant organism present.

Accepted Answer

Sepsis: It can certainly depend on the etiology of the sepsis and the degree of organ dysfunction that occurred. Some recover fully, some take weeks, some never quite recover organ function and cardiac, pulmonary, brain and kidney function may be impaired afterwards.  If he is still with fever days/weeks into therapy, i would make sure he has been evaluated for endocarditis with blood cultures and an echo.

This is a serious: allegation. I recommend that you report your concerns to your local medical society and/or the medical licensing board. They can initiate an independent investigation of your father's medical records and of his doctor's conduct and abilities.  While sadly this won't bring your father back, it may prevent harm to someone else in the future.

Depends: The risk of death in sepsis depends on the number of organ systems that are impaired/affected.  A rough mortality estimate is 20 percent risk per organ system (ie if lung and kidney affected a rough death estimate would be 40 percent).

Accepted Answer

Septic shock: Septic shock can be fully recovered from without long term problems. However, depending upon the comorbid conditions and complications experienced during septic shock, people are at risk for long term issues. These might include residual lung, cardiac, kidney, neurologic and psychologic issues.
