Similar: Septic shock can occur with many types of bacteria including Meningococcal bacteria, other bacteria, fungal infections and even viruses. They have in common an overwhelming immune response which causes innocent bystander damage to normal organ function.

Yes and No: Septic shock is a result of any massive infection that drops the blood pressure down and threatens the brain and heart by massive widening of the outside blood vessels. Menningicoccal sepsis is a special type of infection that is due to a bacteria and therefore can cause septic shock.
