Narrowing: "stenosis" means narrowing.  Most commonly stenosis of the carotid artery is from atherosclerotic disease, or hardening and buildup of plaque within the artery itself.  Atherosclerotic disease of the carotid artery is implicated in stroke and is best monitored by a vascular surgeon, who can easily follow the degree of narrowing by ultrasound on a periodic basis.

Yes: Although a angiogram of the carotid artery's could be done during a cath procedure for pfo, most times it not a good idea. There would be an increased risk of stroke and increased dose of contrast. A ultrasound carotid duplex would be safer.

Surgery promoted to ↓ narrowing; risk: stroke.

Narrowing in artery: When there is significant narrowing in carotid artery-that would create turbulant and that can be heard on examination and called carotid bruit.

Ultrasound: A carotid duplex scan or ultrasound is the best test to start with to evaluate your carotid arteries for blockages. If you have blockages, a blood test to check your cholesterol levels is also a good idea.
