Abscess: Bottom line is that even if local anesthetic is injected it usually isn't effective for incision and drainage pain of an abscess.

i have an abscess on my left buttock near the midline. it started draining on its own but i do need to apply pressure to get everything out. if not, it becomes painful. is that okay? do i need antibiotics?

: Unless they are tiny most abscesses need to be surgically drained, and their inner lining removed. If not, the reaccumulate and continue to drain. In the short term a warm compress and assisted drainage can reduce discomfort. Antibiotics may or may not help.

i have a big parotitis abscess and its draining puss from a tiny opening. i could feel more puss needs to come out. if i were to apply polysporin on the abscess, will the tiny opening heal and seal and prevent the remaining puss from coming out?

: A bacterial abscess is usually treated with systemic antibiotics, not with topicals. Are you being treated by a dentist/oral surgeon/physician? If not, you should be.

Not really: Get to your detist and get the problem resolved properly.  Infection probably is already into your blood stream which although highly unlikely but can kill you.  Dont risk it get to your dentist.

Remove while you can: It is evident s/he felt you could remove the post now, which is very important. Whether or not it abscesses will depend on the type of germ &amp; success of treatment. If you don't get the post out now, the tissue may swell and trap it requiring it to be cut out. Most of these infections require post removal. The hole closes &amp; must be re-done months later.

See a physician: You are describing an infection, regardless of what the dentist says. He may be correct that you have no dental abscess, or maybe there wasn't an infection when he saw you, but blood and pus means infection. You need medical evaluation and possibly drainage and/or oral antibiotics. Don't wait. You should be seen soon because these infections can progress rapidly!

Interesting: Paraspinal abscess is an infection of the area around the spinal cord.  If the abscess compresses nerves, it can cause serious neurologic problems including paralysis.  It can come from an area of adjacent infection or it can be seeded from a distant site via the bloodstream.  This is usually a surgical emergency or it can be drained by ct guidance. Iv antibiotics.
