Read the directions: There should be something with it. I suggest using a small amount to rub all over the affected skin. Wash off after a few hours or over night. Expect to see desired result in appearance after a few weeks. Expect recurrence. The more you sweat the more you will get TV. Oral azole pill (I give a single dose of fluconazole) is easiest, most effective, least expensive.

Skin irritants: Although it would be unlikely for oils and lotions to cause fungal infections in people with normal skin, there are chemicals in some products that create sensitivity and rashes.  Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection which may have been able to infect you if you have become sensitive to the oils and your skin cannot protect itself as well as usual.

Probably not, but: not sure.  Since TV damages skin pigment (hence the name versicolor), that area of skin is more sensitive to sunburn that normal skin.  Also, with sun exposure, the normal skin gets darker and the contrast between that and the affected skin is greater. That could make it seem like the TV has recurred.  Use sunscreen!  Take OTC pain killer if needed. Retreat if symptoms recur or rash spreads.

TINEA VERSICOLOR: It is caused by fungus infection not by baby oil.

Topical anti fungal : Depending on the extension and location of the disease, you can use from Selenium Sulfide shampoo (like Selsun Blue) or Clotrimazole or terfinabine creams. Also oral antifungals can be taken for recalcitrant cases. You should expect  that the skin discoloration may persist for months after treatment and resolution have occurred.

Medications: Depends on how extensive it it. 
If it covers a large portion of your body then ointment/cream would be inconvenient to apply all over. If it is just small amount you could use Ketoconazole 2% cream apply once daily for 14 days. If extensive then see your pcp for oral ketoconazole.

Not fatal: Tinea versicolor is not fatal.  Anti-dandruff shampoos will work occasionally, but anti-fungal creams are more effective.  Here are some to try;

It's possible: I like for people to alternate therapies- letting them sit on the skin for 5 minutes or so in order to allow the medicated wash to take effect.  Some over the counter remedies include selsun shampoo and ketoconazole.  Oral medications can be used, but there is a risk of liver damage with those.

i've had tinea versicolor for at least 10 years. only on  my trunk. clotrimazole doesn't work fast enough. what else can i use?

See dermatologist: Milder cases can be treated with otc creams  but  more severe cases can be treated with prescription drugs such as  diflucan, (fluconazole) ketoconozole, itracanozole or ciclopirox cream.
