The ester type local anesthetics, which are metabolized to PABA by the liver, are more likely to cause allergic reactions. Ester types include procaine and tetracaine. Even these ester type anesthetics only cause allergic reactions in a very small percentage of patients.

See your doctor: First make sure they are esophageal spasms and then get the medication from your doctor for that condition.  Numbing your esophagus does not stop muscular spasm.

Same drug: Viscous Lidocaine contains 2% Lidocaine whereas regular Lidocaine is supplied in various concentrations depending on useage. Viscous form is for intra oral anesthesia topically and contains methyl paraben and propyl paraben and sodium carboxymethylcelluloae to adjust the viscosity.

Not a good idea: Swallowing viscous Lidocaine is not good for them and could lead to choking. Chewing on something cold and firm is more helpful. Give them a damp washcloth that as been frozen in the freezer to chew on. Commercial teeth rings that can be frozen are available as well. Teething is a normal process. Avoid medication like painkillers unless absolutely necessary. Most babies really don't need them.
