May be normal: If the elevated blood pressure is truly transient, it may just be "white coat hypertension", induced by anxiety or stress.  Although not entirely benign, it is certainly less serious than persistent high blood pressure.  Home BP measurements with a calibrated BP device, or better, ambulatory 24 hour BP monitoring, can sort it out.  Night time bps, if elevated, may convey greater risk.

Needs watching: Blood pressure is very variable, increasing in response to stress, waking up, cold temperature, alcohol, decongestants, eye drops, and others. Transient elevations in BP are not necessarily dangerous but can be a precursor to chronic hypertension. I recommend measuring BP in duplicate 10 times over 2 days a month and then reviewing the average with your md.

Yes: It depends on the size of the sodium load and your body's sensitivity to it. It may be several hours to several days.

It depends: Many factors play in to it but my best guess is that one's fight or flight response is activated based on the potential threat of what the "authority" might say or do.   
People are understandably feeling vulnerable when they see a physician and it is most common for patients not to be aware of this vulnerability and the feelings associated with same.

Its more often: the other way around. Vessels dilate leading to syncope or presyncope. Pulmonary hypertension in your age group is more often a consequence of obstructive sleep apnea

what are the causes of atrial fibrillation and can it be transient. i am a 60 yr old male with treated hypertension and elevated cholesterol.?

Yes and no: Atrial fibrillation (af) can be transient.  If you use alcohol or caffeine in quantity, stop. [seek help if withdrawal occurs].  Be sure your BP is well-treated.  Seek an ideal weight and prudent diet.  Most af in older individuals is a result of cumulative injury to the conduction system in the heart from thickening/high bp/cholesterol.

can brain damage due to temporary spike in blood pressure cause hypertension i had temporary spike in bp 160/100 it had effected brain too much i can feel will this go away once brain is normal i'm currently on meds?

Accepted Answer

: No, only does chronic hypertension (year after year) cause irreversible brain damage but rarely in acute case unless you suffer a stroke due to the hypertensive crisis. Severe hypertensive crisis may cause neurologic symptoms such as confusion, blurred vision, convulsion, etc. but those usually resolve without residual damages if treated appropriately. BP of 160/100 rarely causes any acute issue.

i was diagnosed with bell's palsy last saturday and was rushed to sjgh. i need to see a doctor for continuation of check up but i am a visitor here and sjgh issued me a temporary 2 months medi-cal. i also need prescription for my hypertension, etc?

Elevated BP: Hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90 (either value). Normal BP is considered 120/80 with pre-hypertension as 120-140/80-90. For pre-hypertension recommendations include improved diet (low salt) and exercise with consideration of an anti-hypertensive medication.  Hypertension can lead to problems such as heart attack and stroke and usually does not cause any symptoms.
