No: See your Dentist for this. It may simply be hardened calculus (tarter) build-up under the gums that has turned dark and is making the gums appear black. OR, it could be something else, having to do with the gums themselves. Often we see systemic medical problems appear in the mouth. See your Dentist for examination, diagnosis and tx options. Depends why: Lidocaine may be injected into the gums safely by your dentist for pain relief. If you are talking about using Lidocaine for teething pain in babies, the answer would be no. This would not be safe. Your pediatrician can recommend better remedies to help with teething pain. A cold teething ring often helps. If this doesn't answer your question, let us know!

No right answer: What ever works is the best way to go.  cold turkey may be right for some but is hard.  If there is an oral fixation as part of your habit the substitutes may be of benefit.

Yes: Most expiration dates are not all that accurate. It is not like a medicine is fine one day and the next day it suddenly goes bad. If it's just a few months past the expiration date it's probably perfectly fine. If it is way past it may not be quite as potent as it once was but it will not be dangerous. Try it and see.
It will certainly be WAY safer than smoking cigarettes, which are deadly poison!

More info needed: Bleeding gums are usually associated with gingivitis, from not flossing teeth.  Bleeding gums can sometimes be associated with a blood problem or a nutritional problem.  At any rate you need to be seen by your physician or dentist to clarify what is going on.
