Dehydration: Since the body is 80% water, dehydration can lead to shrinkage of all the major tissues, including around the eye.  When one is dehydrated, the eye appears sunken because the surrounding tissues are shriveling up.  Try to drink 5-8 glasses of water per day, if you are of normal weight and are in good health.

Yes: Compensate by drinking lots of liquids including water,  gatorade, ginger ale etc

Not supposed : Your eyes are not supposed to dilate when exposed to light. They are supposed to constrict or get smaller.

sometimes i wake up between 3 and 5 am, and if i open my eyes, they sting very severely and feel like a grain of sand is in them. sometimes it is just one eye, sometimes both. it may be correlated with dehydration, but im not sure. what could it be?

Eye symptoms: Symptoms probably due to dry eyes. Also have to make sure there is full closure when sleeping. You might try a lubricating gel at bedtime. If symptoms persist you should see an ophthalmologist.

Not much: If a child is otherwise well, taking normal feeds and urinating routinely without vomiting, diarrhea, fevers, etc, a slight depression of the fontanelle ("soft spot") need not be cause for alarm. Unless something else of concern is happening, this is not a reason to visit the ER. A pediatrician could safely confirm that this is normal during regular hours.

It is unlikely that: you have "chronic dehydration" as you obviously are able to drink. There are however diseases that cause dry eye and dry skin that are autoimmune disorders. You need to be evaluated by a health care professional and have blood work obtained to determine the real cause of your symptoms.
