what is the purpose of ted stockings after surgery ?

Blood clots: After surgery a person is often inactive or required to be at bed rest. Unfortunately, this inactivity can lead to pooling of blood in the legsand increases the risk of blood clots (dvt). Ted stockings increase passive pressure in the legs, decreases blood pooling and thus lowers the risk of leg clots that could cause a pulmonary embolus if they were to travel to the lung.

Stuff happens: Most of the time in life, we are lucky and bad things don't happen to us after we take the proper precautions. But, the world is not a perfect place. Stuff happens sometimes. Should we stay at home and never go out to try things? No! We look at the risks and the benefits, and then go out and live life. Look both ways, have faith, and then cross the street... you'll ALMOST never get run over.

Compression Stocking: You need to confer with your surgeon for the exact answer here. It can be safe to wear the stockings overnight. There are many compression wraps in the wound care field that stay on for up to a week at a time, so wearing a stocking overnight is a possibility.

Lymphedema specialis: You really need to go to a lymphedema specialist who will be a physical therapist with extra training who can fit with appropriate compression garments, teach massage techniques and excercises and recommend any newer technology that may help in your situation.  You should get a referral from your doctor and insurance may cover some of it.

Call doctor ASAP: With back surgery, you would likely be more sedentary post-op. I am concerned that you may have develop a blood clot in your legs and you need to call your doctor ASAP since this may be a life-threatening issue.  There may be other reasons for your problem, but this is likely the most urgent problem to be ruled out.

Hematoma: Periosteal hematomas do take a long time to be reabsorbed . But a year is a very long time and size is worrisome. You should really see physician obtain radiographs.

Post Op: Your surgeon must think so. They know your body and your weight and the state of your physical health and they believe to protect your life you need to work to prevent dvts.

This depends on: The type of surgery you are having. Sometimes just basic pain medications, such as opioid based pills like Percocet can be effective pain control. If the surgery is more invasive, you may need anything from patient controlled analgesia or timed IV medications like morphine or dilaudid. Your surgical team will most likely make sure your pain is controlled effectively, but let them know if they dont.
