over ultrasound, doctor found 1 ovary is way smaller than other (normal size, simple cyst). were investigating ovulation mild bleeding. estradiol, fsh are normal. is this shrunk ovary a sign of impending menopause? im still having regular periods?

Accepted Answer

: Ovarycsize reduces when you get older and approach menopause. It won't be surprised that when one ovary becomes hypofunction, the other one can compensate which explains one of your ovary is of normal size and your sex hormones are still normal.

is it normal ovary size? worried because my mother had a early menopause at 32yrs, will i be able to concieve?

"Menopause at 32"?: Ovarian measurements are essentially normal.  Your mother may have had cessation of her menstrual function, but there are other causes of this besides an "early menopause".   If you are not yet prepared to attempt pregnancy, your situation can be evaluated when that decision is made. There are many options at that point to assist you.

i'm going to be 52 next month. i had a partial hysterectomy in 2005 and was wondering if i would be having a normal menopause; i do have my ovaries.?

Yes: Average age for menopause is 51yo but varies from mid-late 40s to mid-50s. If you still have your ovaries, then you should undergo normal menopause, although the transition may be relatively asymptomatic for you. If your ovaries were removed at the time of your hysterectomy, then most likely you would have been given some form of estrogen to take for the last several years.

Menopausal: A person is only considered menopausal after no cycle for 12 months... That being said... If you are having abnormal bleeding after the age of 35 and someone felt pressed to check an u/s you likely need an endometrial biopsy sampling to ensure that there are no abnormal cells... If bleeding is very light and you have not stopped bleeding for 1 year u may be able to skip bx ... Talk to your doc.

This is a: reasonable plan to follow.  As always, talk to your doctor, if you are unsure. Also a second opinion is an option as well.

Menopause: Menopause can be an inexact determination. Over the first few years of menopause, while hormones levels drift downward, there may be specific environmental or life stressors that can bring on a spike and cause bleeding. Talk to your gyn Dr about your concerns, but your symptoms are not concerning.

Get examined now: You need to be immediately examined by a GYN MD to determine if, in fact, those are your ovaries that are enlarged. Post menopausal ovaries tend to "shrink" in size and are not palpable abdominally  even in reproductive age women. Ovarian cysts and cancers are a concern.

VERY UNLIKELY, but..: After hysterectomy it is difficult to tell when menopause occurs without the cessation of periods to alert the woman. Most women 'go through' menopause in late 40's-early 50's so it would be very unlikely for you to be menopausal @ 24. Since 1 ovary was removed and one remains it is possible the remaining ovary is low functioning. Lab tests (fsh/lh) would be elevated in premature ovarian failure.

Ovarian function: As long as the ovary is functional(making hormones) then menopause cannot occur with or without hysterectomy.

Common sx: Typical hot flashes but not reliable can be supported by hormone levels fsh, lh.
